Adventure #4 - The Incorrigible Mr. Mittens

Elodie attempts to summon a now-familiar ball of fire, hoping to scorch the gargoyle that has been attacking her.

Feeling surrounded, Talmut attempts to conjure more gobs of acid ... but he's feeling hedged in and fumbles with the spell.

The Archon continues to back away from the Gargoyle, spewing holy light as it goes.
- Move = 5' step to W8
- Light Ray vs. T6 = 15 (Miss)

Chopping at the winged creature, Jeremiah delivers a frenzy of axe blows to his enemy. The evil creature howls in agony, "Aaaharg!" The dark, stone-like hide of the gargoyle splits and a dark red fluid pours from it like blood. Maybe it is blood.

Again, Gumphrey stabs wicked beast, even as it begs for mercy. The monster falls dead, immediately. Stepping forward, Gumphrey says to Talmut, "Get behind me!"
- Attack Roll = 32 (Crit; 17 to Verify) Damage = 40 Damage!
- The dagger also drains 2 HPs from Gumphrey.
- 5' step to T6

Elodie calls upon the spirits of fire once again, but her request is denied!

The remaining gargoyles press the attack. Talmut and Elodie are both injured, but the Archon is torn to shreds.

Elodie stomps one foot in frustration and thrusts her hands out again, hoping to be more successful this time.

Jeremiah's axes cut the enemy deep, its dark blood splattering all over the woodsman and his axes (not to mention the sandy floor).

"No, no! Let me live!" the foul creature whines.

Gumphrey steps between Elodie and the monster behind her, brandishing his dagger with lethal intention.
- Attack Roll = 25 (hit); 12 damage. Gumphrey also suffers 1 damage.

Init 5
Elodie implores the spirits to do her bidding, calling for a giant ball of swirling fire. This time, it appears, torching the injured Gargoyle and ending its miserable existence.

The last two gargoyles begin to scream and holler. "No, don't kill us!" "We only want live!" "Please!"

R&R - Round 4

Init 21
The gargoyle that has been rending Talmut slowly backs away. "Please, we'll leave you be," he says, as he takes flight.
- 5' step to U4 & 5' step up and over T4 (he's air-born, 5 feet up)

The other continues to hover in place, biding its time.
- Readied Action.

Elodie moves toward Talmut, keeping one eye on the injured Gargoyle. "Stay back," she warns, "or I'll toast you, next!" Once she has reached Talmut's side, she pulls out her wand and taps him lightly, hoping to ease some of his injuries.

Use Wand of Cure Serious Wounds, cures 12 HP.

OOC: Geez! Rolled two 1's and a 3...

If the Gargoyles do not move to attack again, Elodie will keep the Flaming Sphere in the same location. "We want to look at this book," she calls to the gargoyles. "Can you tell us anything about it?" If they do not seem willing to answer, Elodie will roll the Flaming Sphere towards the closest Gargoyle.

Intimidation check: 6 (5 + 1 Cha)

The gargoyles keep their distance, as Elodie moves over to Talmut and taps him with the wand.
Meanwhile, Jeremiah cautiously enters the room.

When Elodie asks about the book, the Gargoyles respond ...

"That book? The big one? It's cursed"
"Yes, very bad, very nasty curse. You don't want to touch it."
"Right. That's why we attacked you: to stop you from touching it."
"Yes, right. Anyone who wants the book must be very evil."
"Evil, indeed. The worst kind."
"It's best you just leave it alone."

"Talmut, can you look at the book and determine if these creatures are being honest? I have a hard time believing that these gargoyles were just trying to keep us safe..." Elodie will tap Talmut again with the wand as she says this, trying once again to heal the battered conjurer. Elodie will also attempt to determine how truthful the gargoyles are being.

Use Wand of Cure Serious Wounds on Talmut, cures 20 HP.

Sense Motives check: 23 (15 + 8)

"No, I didn't say to keep you safe."
'Yeah, he said to stop you from getting it."
"Yeah, because only evil persons would want a cursed book."
"Right. Evil, nasty persons."

Elodie still doesn't believe them; they just seem disingenuous. Besides, their explanation still doesn't make any sense. They probably realized the tide of battle was turning against them and decided that a truce was somehow better than a simple surrender.

In response to Jeremiah's question, Talmut points out that the Servitor of Good detected "great evil" in the room, before it was destroyed by these foul creatures.

"Let me study it for a moment longer to see if it's worth taking with us..." She takes a moment to gather her thoughts and pauses to ask the spirits for help before she peers at the book again.

Spellcraft check: 17 (6 + 10 Spellcraft + 1 Guidance)
(OOC: Specifically, Elodie is trying to figure out if the book is dangerous to carry with her)

"No, don't touch it!" the Gargoyles hiss, as Elodie reaches for the Tome.

... but Elodie ignores them and reaches for the book, anyway. After a moment of fondling its gilded pages, Elodie discovers that the book radiates a powerful "universal" aura of magic. The pages themselves seem to contain archaic sigils and academic scripts; although Elodie is not trained in the wizardly arts, she is quite convinced that this book grants wishes to anyone capable of reading it.

"This seems much too powerful to just leave behind. I'll take it with me." Elodie puts the book in her bag, ignoring the wails of the gargoyles. "Now I'm ready to head to the next room!"

Jeremiah wrote:“If Talmut is unable to read it, I know a few people who may.”

Talmut insists that he can, in fact, read it ... but he wants to wait until the next time you set camp.

Jeremiah will form the usual rank and proceed to the next library with axes drawn.

The party makes their way to the other library, where they find a scene very much like the first one: rows and rows of books, with four tower-like shelving-units supporting four stone Gargoyles.

This time, however, the gargoyles are not staring at the center of the room, but rather, they have their backs turned to it.

Also, instead of a large tome, the pedestal in the center of this room is topped with dark red velvet and hosts a large white crystal. Standing in the center of the velvet-covered surface, the crystal shines as it reflects the light of Elodie's torch.

"Oooooh," Elodie says as she steps closer to the crystal. She stares at the flickering light for a moment. "I wonder what it does..." She attempts to determine if the crystal is magical and, if it is, what kind of magic it may contain.

Cast Detect Magic.

Jeremiah will speak to the gargoyles..


"If you wish to not be destroyed like the others of your kind, you will explain the meaning of this large white crystal."

Elodie detects an aura of evocation on the crystal, but the gargoyles do not answer Jeremiah.

Gumphrey stares at it for moment, before adding "I think it's a trap."
