"Tomorrow I can examine this scroll."
Can we make some makeshift torches out of some of the clothing and backpack scraps and the spikes, or anything else in the area?
GM Edit: OOC: Sure.

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
As Talmut digs through the old bags, attempting to discern what is of value and what is garbage, Elodie shreds one of the bags and attempts to wrap Talmut's injured knee.
Heal check (treat deadly wounds): 6 (1 + 9 - 4[no healer's kit])
Frowning at how crumbly and dry the leather is, Elodie has a hard time making it into an effective wrap for Talmut's knee. "Try walking on that for a little while, and see how it goes...I can try again in a little while."
OOC: It takes an hour to treat deadly wounds, so I'll try again to when we set camp.

To keep things moving ...
While Elodie treats Talmut's injury, Maius and Jeremiah have plenty of time to lower themselves back into the pit to get materials for torches, as Talmut has suggested. By the time she finishes (nearly an hour later), the party has two more torches a piece; the're crappy, crummy torches, but they'll work.

Jeremiah will check the perimeter of the hole to see if there is an edge to shimmy across.

Maius helps with the recovery of Talmut and all the valuables from the pit. "Talmut, let me look at your wounds." He pokes, somewhat crudely, at the wound and says, "May your recovery be swift!"
Cure Light wounds: d8+1=9
O.o.C.: If necessary after looting the pit, Maius will use Cure Light wounds. 1st of 2 for the day.

There is a very narrow ledge (less than 2" wide) between the pit and the side walls. There is about 10 feet between the pit and the door.Jeremiah wrote:Jeremiah will check the perimeter of the hole to see if there is an edge to shimmy across.

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
"Nice work, Maius," Elodie acknowledges the bard's work on Talmut's injury, and then moves to inspect the pit once more. "Do you think we could take the beam off of the door, and lay it across the pit? Or if it's not long enough, maybe we could all stand on one side while the smallest of us walks over it like a bridge and jumps the rest of the way over, with a rope?"

"See if there's anywhere we can tie the ropes to swing across? Otherwise, its up and down the opposite sides one at a time." Either way, Maius gathers his own rope to assist with the task.

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
- OOC: Hmm. Will the party shimmy the ledge, walk the plank, or climb one at a time in and out of the pit?
Maius looks around, but doesn't see anything suitable to swing from. The sconces might hold his weight (maybe), but they don't seem quite high enough for the task. Besides, he can only reach the closest ones, which are right at the near edge of the pit (that is, he can't reach ones one the other side of the pit). The ceiling itself is fairly bare, offering little to hold a rope ... even if there was something, how would he reach it?
Climbing in and out of the pit, on the other hand, would require only one person to make the initial climb. That person could then use rope to help everyone climb out the other side, after the last person uses a rope to help lower the others in. The last person would, of course, have to climb down on their own, but could then be pulled up by those on the other side.
- OOC: The first person would have to make two climb checks vs. a DC of 25 (20 if he braced himself in a corner). The next two people would have to make two climb checks vs. a DC of 5. The last person would have to make one of each.
In her mind, Elodie sizes up the wooden beam that is barring the door behind you, and determines that it is definitely less than ten feet; maybe eight or nine. If three people were to stand single-file at one end, that would leave (at most) six feet left to jut out over the pit. If the beam didn't break under the weight of the person who walked it, they would only have to jump about four or five feet ... provided they didn't lose their balance and fall off the beam.
- OOC: The first person would have to make two acrobatics checks; one vs.a DC of 17 and another vs. a DC of 12. Everyone else could then climb in and out (as described above) ... alternately, the last person could throw the beam across, and then try the same trick in reverse. Jumping onto the beam, however, might be more difficult (DC 5 to make the jump, DC 22 to stick the landing, and then a DC 17 to walk across).
Jeremiah's idea to shimmy the ledge offers many of the same challenges as the other two ideas.
- OOC: The first person would have to make only a single climb check vs. a DC of 15. Alternately, he could try to walk the narrow ledge, with a single DC 20 acrobatics check. Everyone else could do the same, or they could climb in and out of the pit as described above.
- In all three scenarios, the last person could also try to swing across while the other three held the rope. He would then hit the far side of the pit roughly half way down. No roll would be needed to hang on to the rope, assuming he tied himself around the waste ... but, a DC 15 acrobatics check would be needed to avoid slamming into the wall and taking d6 damage. (The second and third persons could also try swinging across, but it would be much more difficult for one person to hold onto that rope than it would be for three).

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
While considering the different plans, Elodie stops to think about her strengths and what she can do. Without saying a word, she hands the torch to Talmut and pulls her rope out of her bag. She knots it firmly around her waist, and takes several long steps away from the pit. She closes her eyes and whispers a quiet and brief prayer to the spirits of the cave.
Cast Guidance on self.
After she finishes her prayer, she opens her eyes, takes a deep breath, and takes a running leap over the pit.
Jump (with running start): 12 (taking 10 +1 Dex + 1 Guidance)
If she lands, she turns around with a grin and says, "Okay, who's next?"

Elodie sticks the landing, safely on the other side of the pit.
OOC: Oh yeah, the DC to just "jump" over it is only 11 (with a running start).

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
Jeremiah will follow Elodie's lead...
OOC: That is why I wanted to know if there was a gap between the door and the pit. If not I was hoping there was a ledge...
OOC: Is jump a straight roll without acrobatics?
GM Edit: Yes, it's a Dex check and is subject to your armor check penalty.

Elodie unties the rope that she carried over with her and ties her end to the door handle, and then grabs onto it. "Okay, if anyone feels like they need to use the rope, I'm ready!"

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
Jeremiah begins to remove his armor. Talmut ties the rope around his waist and takes a few steps back, before dashing forward and leaping over the pit, behind Elodie. After a minute, the armor is off and the rope has been moved from Talmut to Jeremiah. Jeremiah, too, get a running start and then hurls himself across the pit.
- OOC: Armor removal per Skype. Jump check = 13 (Take 10)
Once across, he unties the rope and tosses it back over to Maius. Maius chucks the armor back over to Jeremiah, who begins putting it back on. Finally, Maius, too, ties the rope around his waist and makes then jump.
- OOC: Jump check = 16 (Take 10)
A minute later, with the party finally across the pit, they approach the door.

OOC: My reply and edit and screens are all goofy. The font is showing up the same color as the background. I am forced to use the same “copy and paste from Word” trick that Mack has been using. Anyone else having this issue?
Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
Elodie unties her rope from the door once everyone is safely cross, winding it up and stashing it in her pack. Afterwards, she puts her ear to the door, hoping to hear if anything is going on on the other side.
Perception check to be made by GM, Elodie has a +7 to Perception.

Maius follows the rest of the group in jumping across the open pit. He takes some steps back and readies a running start. After he easily clears the jump he says "Why didn't I think of that?"
Acrobatics: +6
O.o.C.: Mal, try using the little clipboard next to the editor mode button. Its a small window, but you can still do everything you need to do. I think its a little easier than cut and paste from word.
GM Edit: OOC: Thanks, than helped.

With her ear against the door, Elodie hears nothing ... at first.
Then, she hears the feint sound of an object being dragged across the floor, followed by a distinct THUMP! (as if something heavy fell to the floor). A couple of smaller taps follow, almost like footsteps ... and then what sounded like a voice, though she couldn't make out what was said.
Then, silence, again.

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
Elodie describes what she hears to the group after the sounds fade. If no one stops her, she will pull the door open just a few inches and peek out, trying to see what is beyond the door. If she doesn't see anything through the crack, then she will pull the door open a little wider, until she can see.

Re: Adventure #1 - The Jolly Toad
The opening door creaks loudly as Elodie pulls it open. CREEEEeeeEEAK!
Past the door, lies a much larger room ... larger even than the radius of her torch light. The air smells musty and dusty, with a trace of salt and frankincense. The first thing Elodie sees are a few bones, scattered across the floor with scraps of cloth and flesh still dangling from them. Then, at the edge of the torch light, she sees a body. Dressed in an ancient funeral gown, it's just lying there, right in the middle of the floor ... straining her eyes to get a better look, she thinks the cadaver's arm is missing. Other than that, all she sees is darkness.
Behind her, Talmut casts a spell.

Elodie motions for everyone else to be a bit quieter, and then pauses. Summoning a bit of energy, she attempts to repair the hinges to avoid drawing more attention to the door.
Cast Mending on door.
Afterwards, she pulls the door open just wide enough and slips through, attempting to stay quiet. She begins to move towards the body on the floor.
