THE BROKEN BOAR (Twin Towns)

The common room of the Broken Boar looks like that of many other inns. One large table dominates the center of the room, surrounded by smaller tables, each with a candle burning at the center. The bar itself stands at the far end of the room, with the kitchen behind it. A narrow stage sits to the right, currently unoccupied. Stairs leading up to the rooms stands to the left. The scent of ale mingles with the scents of roasting meat and body odor.

The common room isn't too crowded, but it isn't empty, either. A score of customers occupy the various tables, most of whom look to be regulars (and probably locals). A few are eating, a few are gambling, and all of them are drinking. Nobody, however, is sitting at the center table (which appears large enough for twelve people).

The barkeep is an elderly man with thick white mutton chops. The servers both look like they could be his children; one boy and one girl.

At night ...

An easel stands near the entrance with a sign, displaying a menu of the inn's services and nightly specials.

  • Private rooms (2 beds) for 3 coins per night
  • Stabling for 1 coin per night
  • Mug of ale, mead, or wine for 1 coin
  • Pitcher of ale, mead, or wine for 6 coins
  • Bath water for 1 coin
  • Luxury bath with hot water, soap, and towels for 2 coins
  • Porridge or baked beans for 1 coin
  • Soup or Stew for 2 coins
  • - Soup of the Day: Pork stew with taters and leaks
  • Daily special for 2 coins
  • - Tonight's special: baked bread, roasted pork with taters and carrots
  • Fresh feasts must be purchased a full day in advance

In the morning ...

As you enter the common room, you notice that the easel (that stood by the front door last night) has since been moved closer to the stairs, offering the breakfast menu to overnight guests, as they head out for the day.

  • Mug of ale, mead, or wine for 1 coin
  • Mug of coffee or tea for 1 coin. Free with breakfast.
  • Porridge or baked beans for 1 coin
  • Eggs, taters, and baked bread for 2 coins
  • Rashers, taters, and baked bread for 2 coins
  • Fresh feasts must be purchased a full day in advance
  • Bath water for 1 coin
  • Luxury bath with hot water, soap, and towels for 2 coins

The barkeep leans in close and whispers ... "The Red Eye Special. It's on the secret menu." He then sets a mug of steaming coffee in front of you and adds a little something to it from his own personal flask.

THE CAMELS' CUP (Zargos)

Narrow streets head off in every direction, the broadest of which cuts toward the heart of the city. Along that road, you spot an inn (the first of many); the sign out front reads "The Camels' Cup." ... Peering further into the distance, down that very same street, you cannot make out the signs, but you do see a building with a ship-like mast protruding from the roof. Perhaps that is the other inn she spoke of: Northwind's Sails.

NORTHWIND'S SAILS (Zargos)

The inn itself is a strange building. The lower floor appears to be constructed from the same ancient stone as the rest of the city, but the top two floors are made of wood. The strange thing, though, is that the upper floors are rounded in a way that causes them to jut out past the lower walls and out over the street. Tiny circular windows run the length of the upper floors and a tall wooden mast sticks straight out toward the sky (complete with canvas sails). It's then that they realize the upper floors were literally made from the remains of an old ship.

The common room is large, with stone walls and gigantic woven rugs. Paintings hang on every wall and there are plenty of tables. Two barkeeps are working behind the bar at the far end and a half a dozen servers are wandering around. The stage in the center of the room is nothing more than a wooden platform laid upon a dozen standing barrels.

"Very well," the barkeep says. "I'll have a wench bring some over. Do you prefer a girl wench or a boy wench?"

The rooms at Northwind's sails are relatively small, but surprisingly cozy. Then again, maybe the wooden walls and ceilings only make the rooms look small? Either way, luxurious rugs cover the bedroom floors, allowing your feet to stay warm when you step softly to your bed.

In each room, the outer wall is bowed slightly and presents a small circular window, allowing you to easily peer down at the street below.

In the morning ...

Those of you who slept at the inn (or alternately, in the stables) return to the common room and are greeted by the morning staff. (The night staff has gone home, so Pobby isn't here). You do notice that the menu board has been changed ...

From the wagons, the party makes their way over to the inn the Oralee mentioned: the Smoking Horse. Standing just a hundred yards from the city gate, the Smoking Horse is a three-story wooden building with four chimneys (thick gray smoke pours from each of them, toward the sky). On the door, the engraved image of a recline horse smoking a pipe welcomes you.

Inside, you find an surprisingly large common room. The floors and ceiling are lacquered wood, but the walls are plastered. Mounted on various sections of the walls are a number of unusual trophies and other objects: a broken sword, a rabbit head with antlers, a silvered horse shoe, and so on. A massive hearth stands directly to your right. The bar itself stands at the far end, with numerous tables (and customers) between you and it. A lone lyrist sits at the center table, playing a song.

As you approach the bar, you see an extensive menu board posted behind the barkeeps.
