"Alright," Suzet says. "Let us find you somewhere to sleep!"

Suzet and Lindy and Halvar lead you back into the cave. You've been here before, but this time you're not sneaking in through the back.

The main corridor is wide enough for giants to walk abreast, but not much more. The sides of the tunnel are lined with bunks, bunks that seem to belong to the wounded soldiers quartered within the cave. Occasionally, the main passage widens or splits off, leading to several room-like caverns that are being used as armories, storage, sculleries, infirmaries, map rooms, and the like.

After several minutes of walking the uneven cave floor (and occasionally climbing sets of wooden steps), the journey ends in the very spot where you slew the Mighty Jarigor! Here you find a dozen beds, only three of which seem to have been used any time recently. Stout wooden chests, showing clear signs of age, have been placed at the foot of each.

"This is mine, over here." Halvar says.

Lindy gestures towards her own. "And mine. These other five belonged to our fallen leaders and aren't being used."

"This one is mine," Suzet says, "and these two belong to the other commanders: Stephen and Michel. They should be returning soon. You should take this one, Elodie, next to mine."

"Cap'n, are you hungry?" Halvar asks. "Can I get you some food? I caught a wild ram this morning."

Jeremiah will eat his dinner with Halvar and whoever else joins him. After which he will smoke to calm his bloated stomach and find a bunk to sleep in.

Elodie nods at Suzet's suggestion and sits on the bed for a moment. She throws her pack down, and then stands at Halvar's suggestion to Jeremiah. "May I join you? I'm starving. I'd fight for some stew from The Jolly Toad right now."

"Great! I'll go get some!" Halvar says. "Yes, o'course you can join us. Gumphrey, too, please ... but the Toad was burnt to cinders. There will be no more of that stew." He frowns. After a moment od sadness, Halvar shuffles out of the cave.



A few minutes later, Halvar returns with three bowls of roasted meat. The meal is minimally prepared, but well cooked.

After a bit of food and conversation, everyone tries to sleep. Thoughts of this strange and distressful situation plague your mind, making it difficult to fall asleep ... but eventually, you manage.



Morning comes too quickly.

"So," Gumphrey says, "we have to climb a mountain to go look for ol' Miph?"

Without further ado, the last three members of the Band of Four are ready to head out and start the vigorous climb in search of their old friend, Miphelgara. You suspect this trek will take around 10 hours.

It takes a little while to move around to where the Serpentine Trail begins, but once you find it, it's easy enough to follow. (There are few spots along the climb that are narrow enough or steep enough that they would have posed a challenge to you when you first came to Umbrafall, but nowadays, it's childplay).

A few hours into the climb, you spot a strange sight flying through the air. The creature appears to be a long slender worm, coiling upon itself and dripping with slime, even as it flies through the air. It's head (if that's what it can be called) resembles a fleshy exotic flower ... with teeth.

Obviously, the Band of Four reflexively takes cover, hiding behind the closest rocky outcroppings.

As the creature flies around the bend, getting closer, you get a better look and realize just how big it is. It's at least 20 yards long, with no eyes, and covered with green grub-like parasites.

Gumphrey puts his hand upon the pommel of his dagger and turns toward you with a raised eyebrow. Silently, he mouths the words "Fight it? Or hide?"

When Jeremiah draws his bow and starts unleashing the fury, his first arrow strikes true ... but the rest of his arrows bounce harmlessly off the worm's rubbery hide.

Init 9
Having been struck by an arrow, the enormous monstrosity slithers and sails through the air, approaching Jeremiah with amazing alacrity. Before it comes within a dozen yards, it unleashes a blast of psychic power that staggers Jeremiah's mind.
- Jeremiah's Will Save = 21 (Fail); Jeremiah suffers 86 points of psychic damage.

Init 7
Gumphrey follows suit, firing a couple arrows of his own ... but both of his arrows bounce harmlessly off the massive worm-like creature.
- Attack Rolls = 21, 24 (Miss, Miss)

Init 4
Elodie summons a column of fire to strike the disgusting worm. The radiant flames burn the gigantic worm, leaving a blackened char on its disgusting hide.
- Elodie's Caster Level Check = 27 (Success)
- Monster's Reflex Save = 17 (Fail)

Unable to reach the worm with his axes, Jeremiah sucks down a curative potion and prepares to "hunt" the worm.
- If you didn't roll it already, the potion heals your for 8 HP.

Init 9
Seeing that it's mental "thrust" failed to kill the woodsman, the abhorrent worm tries a slightly different (albeit similar) tactic: it tries to crush Jeremiah's mind with psychic force! Then, it coils around in the air, ceasing its approach, but not quite retreating. Although Jeremiah is able to resist the brunt of the attack, he sheer power of this creature makes him nauseated.
- Jeremiah's Will Save = 26 (Success, just barely). Jeremiah suffers 26 damage and is sickened until next round.
- Sickened means Jeremiah is -2 to damage rolls and most d20 rolls.

Init 7
Gumphrey yells "Hang in there, Jeremiah!" as he fires two more arrows.
- Attack rolls = 30 (Hit) and a Natural 1 (Miss); Damage = 5

Init 4
Seeing Jeremiah flinch momentarily, Elodie swaps wands and taps Jeremiah, helping him regain some power and energy.
- Jeremiah is healed for 30 HP (3d8+7)

The wormish monstrosity continues to coil around in the air. Since the stalwart heroes still haven't fallen, it tries a new tactic and attempts to control Gumphrey's mind!

Gumphrey fires two more arrows, right behind Jeremiah's volley.
- Attack rolls = 22, 25 (Miss, Miss)

Realizing now that magical healing delaying its victory, the monstrous worm targets Elodie with supernatural effect. A green cloud erupts from the druid, threatening to undo her mortal life ... but Elodie endures it easily. 
- Elodie's Fort Save = 22 (Success).

Init 7
Gumphrey fires two more arrows, just hoping to hit something.
- Attack Rolls = 32 (Hit) and 24 (Miss). 2 Damage.

Init 4
She swaps wands again, pointing at the vicious creature. A pillar of fire explodes from the sky, charring its pulsating body. Blistered and charred, the worm loops and coils furiously, trying to extinguish the holy flames.
- Worm's Reflex Save = 12 (Fail). 36 Damage

Jeremiah watches helplessly, as three more arrows bounce harmlessly off the monster's tough hide.

Init 9
Infuriated by the far and realizing that mind control hasn't been working, the monstrous worm decides to charge Elodie! It coils back and then quickly springs forth  to close the distance.As it draws near, four barbed tongues jut forth from its gaping flower-like head! The barbed tongues tear and Elodie's flesh, digging in deep to hold her still.
- Attack Rolls = 24, 26, 35, and a Natural 1 (three hits and a miss); Grab attempt = 45
- Elodie suffers 55 points of damage and is grappled!
- The creature stopped 10' back, because it has reach, but J & G can take 5' steps and still get multiple attacks (flanking would require more movement).

Init 7
Gumphrey drops his bow and rushes forward with dagger. His strikes seem unusually feeble, as he struggles to find a weak spot.
- Attack Rolls = 32 (Hit) & 30 (Hit); 13 damage & 8 damage. Gumphrey suffers 5 damage from his own dagger.

Init 4
Elodie continues attacking, brandishing her wand wildly. The radiant fire strikes the center of the worm, searing and charring it's rubbery flesh.
- Unlike casting a spell, using a wand does NOT require a Concentration check while grappled.
