Elodie recites the oath and then takes out the ring, trying it on multiple fingers to find the best fit. After admiring how official it looks on her hand, she asks the Chancellor, "About how long do you think it will take to find assistants for us? I am brewing potions for our next journey and would like to be sure that I finish in a timely manner."

"Now that we are Deputies, Chancellor, are there official maps of the area we can use?  It may aid in our reporting if we are all working off of the same information.  Further, we can update these maps with the newest intelligence based on our explorations.  Is there anything else that you can think of that could aid us in the completion of out duties, Sir?"

After the audience with the Chancellor, Talmut will complete his crafting, and then start copying his butt off.

OOC - Elodie, what was the gp cost of my share of the potions?

"Three or four days, I would imagine."

"Yes, I'm sure we can arrange to have some maps copied for you. I will send them along with your assistants. That will give the cartographers a few days to get them ready."

OOC: If nobody else has any questions for the chancellor, then you will have another four days of "downtime" before your assistants shows up. That should allow Elodie to finish the potions. It will also give Talmut enough to copy a few more spells (12 more third level spells, 20 more second, 32 more first, or some combination thereof).

OOC: Everyone make sure your food and lodging for the entire 11 days is taken care of. If you're cost of living covers it, then fine. If not, then please make sure rooms at the inn are paid for, as well as the cost of at least two meals per day. If Jeremiah is "living off the land," then please give me one or two Profession: Trapper rolls, so I can figure out how much money he makes from selling furs.

A few days later, four individuals show up at the Jolly Toad, looking for you. They introduce themselves as your assistants. Each is wearing scale armor and carrying packs stuffed with adventuring gear. They also hand you a scroll case full of maps.

"Hello, we were sent by the Vicereine to serve as your assistants. This opportunity is a great honor, and we wish to thank you. I am Lindy Garvin. I was ordered to serve as an assistant to Miss Elodie."

"Right. And I'm Flint. Flint Fortescue. I'm supposed to assist Master Talmut. I hear you are a very capable spell-slinger. I am certain you will find my shield most adequate."

"Which one of you is Jeremiah? I'm Halvar Dent. I hope we can kill some giants together. Don't worry, I'll write it all down, too. But yeah, killing giants: I heard you're pretty good at it."

"And I'm ... oh, hello Gumphrey. How have you been?"

Gumphrey responds, "Glory? Wow. It's good to see you. How long has it been?"

  • Lindy Garvin is Elodie's assistant. Raised in Umbrafall, she is an expert spearman and a trained scribe. (Female, Fighter 3). She is five foot seven with long braided brown hair. (Skills: Handle Animal, Intimidate, Profession Scribe, Ride, Survival).
  • Flint Fortescue is Talmut's assistant. Originally from Vilderoy, he moved to Umbrafall five years ago. A trained scribe and a shield specialist, he carries a trident, as well. (Male, Fighter 3). He is six feet tall and bald-headed. His shield is spiked. (Skills: Craft Books, Intimidate, Knowledge Engineering, Profession Scribe, Ride. He is also somewhat familiar with Religion and Nobility).
  • Halvar Dent is Jeremiah's Assistant. Born and raised in the Angry Mountains, he later moved to the city to become a scribe. He carries a trio of hand axes. (Male, Ranger 3). He is only five foot two, but extremely broad-shouldered, with a tangled red beard. (Skills: Climb, Heal, Intimidate, Knowledge Nature, Perception, Profession Scribe, Profession Shepherd, Stealth, Survival).
  • Glory Stillman is Gumphrey's assistant. Also raised in Umbrafall, she held many jobs before training as a swordsman and scribe for the Vicereine. (Female, Fighter 3). She is five feet three inches with hair of gold. She wields a rapier in one hand and a stiletto in the other. (Skills: Craft Locks, Intimidate, Profession Gambler, Profession Scribe, Profession Sailor).

Elodie notices that Gumphrey and his assistant seem to already know each other, and makes a mental note to herself to ask him about it later. To Lindy, she sticks out her hand and introduces herself. "Hello, Lindy. I'm Elodie, druid of Kelbany. Glad to have you along. Are you well-acquainted with the area outside of Umbrafall? How long have you been employed by the Vicereine?"

After the initial introductions are done, Elodie notices that the assistants all seem to be on foot. "Before we leave, I'd like to secure a second horse for my assistant. Anyone else?"

Elodie will head to the stable just inside the West Gate and make arrangements to buy a combat-trained heavy horse similar to her own, along with a military-style saddle and two saddlebags. She invites Lindy to select a horse, and pays the stablemaster 328 gold pieces.

OOC: Elodie has potions of Water Breathing (CL 5) and Cure Moderate Wounds (CL 5) for herself, Talmut, Jeremiah, and Gumphrey. The cost for these two potions (total) is 750 gp.

Talmut nods in greeting to the four newcomers.

"Greetings, Flint Fortescue.  I am Talmut-Xispur, Son of the Fourth House of Nu'ul.  Your shield will be well appreciated on our journeys ahead.  Though my goals in our exploration are academic, the fates have blessed us with good fortune for our troubles - let us hope they continue to look upon us with favor, and you all can share in that favor, as well.  The Chancellor said you would be bringing maps of the area?"

In response to Elodie's horse suggestion: "I agree."

"Thunder is a great name," Elodie agrees. Elodie fetches Egan from the sable as well, and then she and Lindy head back to the Jolly Toad to wait for the others.

Once everyone has made all of their purchases, Elodie and Lindy are ready to depart.

Talmut wrote:Talmut will crack open the map case and see what's what.
Talmut pulls out the maps and takes a look. There are two large maps; one of the city and one of the valley around it. There are also three medium-sized maps, including a map of Serpentcoil Mountain, a map of the Timberwyld, and a map of the Black Hills. Finally, there are about a dozen smaller maps, half of which pertain to specific parts of the Timberwyld, while the other half detail specific ruins.

Thirteen major ruins are noted on the larger Valley Map (including four that are just outside of the actual valley), as are four entrances to known underground complexes. Talmut is fairly confident that all of these have been thoroughly explored by Adventurers. It's worth noting, too, that "Stephen's Ruins" are not on this map.
Talmut wrote:OOC: Have the Masters returned yet?
After meeting his assistant, and purchasing a horse, Talmut heads back over to the Lab. When he walks in, he sees that the two have just returned.

"Ahh, Talmut! It's good to see you."
"Indeed, it is. I hope everything went well."
"Oh, right. Did you get all the spells you wanted?"
"Not that it matters. What's wrong with you? You know his time is up."
"I just thought ... maybe we could give him some more time."
"Well, that would hardly be fair, now, would it? We told him eight or nine days. Ten at the most."
"But it's been eleven."
"Right, exactly."
"Or eleven?"
"Right. Or eleven."
"Besides, I'm sure he has things to do."
"Oh, that's right. Speaking of which, where did Jeremiah get off to?"
"How do you mean?"
"Well, we were having a smoke and a spot of tea. I just wondered whether or not he was ready for a crumpet."
"A crumpet?! That was eleven days ago!"
"I know, I know ... but they were really good crumpets."
"Oh, they were? Why didn't you offer me one."
"Well, because I'm sure they're stale by now. It's been eleven days."
"..."
"What?"
"Why would Jeremiah want a stale crumpet?"
"Oh, good point. Talmut, tell him a sorry, won't you? I'm afraid his crumpets may have turned."
"May have turned? Oh, good grief."
"Well, either way, thank you, Talmut. Thank you, for stopping by."
"Right, and for watching over the place while we were gone. Thanks again."
"Right, thank you."
"Thank you."
"Stop by anytime."
"Oh yes, we do love company."
"Oh, and bring that friend of yours, next time?"
"Jeremiah?"
"Yes, Jeremiah!"
"Right. Visit any time and feel free to bring Jeremiah with you."
"Of course."

"It is, it is. We definitely shouldn't be talking about it."
"No, we shouldn't."
"But, we will tell you this: it is most wondrous."
"Yes, it is! Most wondrous indeed."
"So, now we have to think up something new ..."

"No, of course not, we just got back."
"Very true. Besides, we have guests."

"Right, then."
"So, Mittens would very much like to see the forest and the hills, the open road and the ..."

Jeremiah will join the wizards in a drink and contemplate bringing Mittens...

"Our journey can often be filled with danger and peril, I would do my best to ensure Mittens safety but can make no guarantees of his safe return. If hearing this does not change your mind, then I would be glad to take Mittens with us. I say this only because we have encountered many creatures and deviants who were far more powerful than us, if it wasn't for our party's craftiness and wits we wouldn't be here with you today."

He will then take another draw from his pipe and sip from his brandy.

"Oh, that's perfect."
"He will be so happy to hear it!"
"Yes, he will!"
"Come here, Mittens!"
Here, Mittens! Come here, boy!"

A moment later, a black cat with white paws and a white chin bounds into the room. When it sees you, it stops in its tracks for a moment, but then approaches cautiously. It seems to eyeing you with some sort of uncertainty. Oddly, neither Talmut nor Jeremiah recall seeing this cat on any of their previous visits.
Jeremiah wrote:He will then take another draw from his pipe and sip from his brandy.
Jeremiah finds the brandy to be surprisingly mellow. The tastes of fruit and alcohol are definitely present, but it's not nearly as harsh or as sweet as he expected. It compliments the smoke quite nicely.

"Hi, Suzet!" Elodie waves, and attempts to brush off rudeness. "The Band of Four had a very successful visit with the Vicereine, and we are all now Deputies of the Court of Umbrafall. This is Lindy, my new travelling companion and appointed assistant. We are waiting for the men...they all seem to have disappeared. Lindy, this is Suzet, a friend of mine from the Jolly Toad." Elodie scrutinizes Suzet as she introduces Lindy, attempting to determine why she is so hostile.

Elodie thinks Suzet seems a little ... jealous? Elodie just now realizes that her relationship with Suzet might not be the "competitive acquaintanceship" she thought it was ... it's possible that Suzet has a bit of a crush on Elodie, in which case she might see Lindy as competition. And judging by Lindy's reaction to hearing Suzet's name, that assumption might prove "unhealthy" for Lindy.
