Elodie follows Jeremiah, pulling out the wand of healing and tapping Gumphrey's injured arm with it.

Cures 14 HP (6 + 3, 2 + 3).

OOC: I have one more charge on the wand and two more potions, but I'll see how Gumphrey is doing after Jeremiah's potion and these two wand uses before using anything else.

After seeing to Gumphrey, Elodie turns to Talmut. "Do you suppose that's it, then? Is it safe to try and open one of these sarcophagi?"

After being force fed a potion and then tapped with a wand, Gumphrey seems to be fully healed. He is, however, still cursed.

After Talmut has answered, Elodie turns to the sarcophagus to her right and tries to move the heavy lid.

Even though the lid is extremely heavy,* it is standing, so Elodie is able to pull it from away from the coffin. The heavy lid tips and falls, slamming into the ground with an audible thud. Inside, she finds a mummified corpse ... thus mummy, however, is not human! It's another reptilian humanoid, similar to the statue you found earlier. Dressed in rags and strips of cloth, the mummy is also adorned in fine jewelry!

*OOC: The lid is well over 1000 lbs.

Since Elodie met no misfortune when she opened the sarcophagus, Gumphrey opens one, as well. "Look," he says, "another man-lizard." This one is dressed much the same as the other one.

After all six sarcophagi are opened, the party find six mummies in total. Five of them are "lizard persons," but one is human. All six are wrapped in strips of cloth, dressed in rags, and decorated with jewelry.

Talmut has no trouble approximating the value of the jewelry.

  • Six ornate gold necklaces, each containing three perfectly cut aquamarines and half a dozen small black pearls (worth 5000 gold each)
  • Six large gold rings, each sporting a sizable black pearl (worth 1000 gold each)
  • Twelve slender gold bracelets (worth 50 gold each)
  • One gold earring (worth 50 gold)
  • One Grand Emerald (worth 5000 gold)
  • and 65 irregular (freshwater) pearls (worth 10 gold each)
In total, Talmut estimates the haul is worth close to 42,000 gold.

Elodie is excited to see all of the jewels. "I wonder if there's anything special about any of these items?" She takes a moment to attempt to determine if any of the objects seem to have any special powers.

Cast Detect Magic.

Nothing appears to be magical. It's just ordinary (and very expensive) jewelry.

"Everything here seems to be ordinary--valuable, but not magical. Shall we take everything back to the surface? Also, do you all think we should try to one of these lizard mummies back to town with us?" Elodie tugs on the arm of one of the mummies, attempting to pull it loose.

"This jewelry will fetch quite a respectable sum - as much as 45,000 Ma'agan dranar, and, though I believe the lizard men warrant further academic study,"  Talmut pauses, staring disapprovingly at Elodie's arm tugging, and then continues. "I believe we should leave them here for now, in their natural repose."

The Conjuror then adds, rather hypocratically, "We will take the jewelry, of course."

I think DSD is still active, can I check this room and the sarcophagi for secret doors and false bottoms?

OOC: DSD is probably still active, yes. You can use it, yes.

Talmut detects no more secret doors or compartments in this room (nor the sarcophagi).

Gumphrey and Jeremiah escape the "pit" with no problem. They are now on the submerged level with octopus and the zombies.

"I'm sorry you two are feeling so poorly. Let's head back to our dry camp and get some rest, and we can see about patching you both up."

Elodie will follow everyone out, stopping to gather as much crab meat as she can carry on the way out. She tosses a chunk to the octopus and pats one of its tentacles one last time as she passes by.

The party makes it out of the Scopulus Arx without incident.

When they reach the surface, they find that one of the horses has been tethered right above the trap door. Still, they have no trouble crawling out from under it as they climb out of the chute.

Once outside, they find that their assistants have constructed a camp just outside the ruins. Lindy and Halvar look terribly hurt (Halvar might even be dead). Also with them, however, is a red-bearded stranger (who also looks hurts).

The assistants and the stranger appear to be on friendly terms.

OOC: Enter Swank the Red.

"Ho, the camp!"  shouts Talmut, seeing the aftermath of a battle.

"You were attacked?! Was it those wicked Blackbirds?  I will feed their eyes to Cghathro the Ever Hungry!"

Finally noticing the newcomer, Talmut asks, "Were you victims of those carrion birds, as well, stranger?"

Swank spits and then bows, "'Swank the Deft', 'Former Member of the Black Blade', at your humble service."

The small man adjusts his hat.

"Apparently, an overgrown of a giant wanted to definitely add us to his human stew! And, a foul stew it is I wager... But, we thwarted it; and, it doth ran off."

Swank kneels by Halvar.

"Poor Halvar was pelted by a rock!" The man spat again, "We ought to tend our wounds, and find it, and disembowel it."

"Oh no!" Elodie momentarily ignores Swank's introduction and rushes to Halvar. She pulls out her wand and taps him lightly with it. As he regains consciousness, she then hands him a potion. "Drink up," she tells him. She then stands to look at Swank. "I'm Elodie. It's nice to meet you, Swank. Thanks for helping our friends fight off that giant. You all look like you've been through quite a fight. Unfortunately, this wand is spent." She pauses and tosses the useless stick into the fire. "I only have one potion left, and no power left to heal anyone with my own magic. Maybe we should take a rest and when my magic is restored, I can patch everyone up...but we'll have to be very careful after that."

Wand heals 5 (2 + 3) HP, potion cures 15 (4 + 6 + 5) HP--20 HP total to Halvar.

"of the Black Blades?" Gumphrey repeats. "Well, it's nice to make your acquaintance."

"I agree with Elodie: a good long rest is in order. I'm not in any condition to travel, let alone fight. I don't think half of us are. But with Black Birds and Giants roaming about, this spot doesn't seem so safe, either. I wish there was a way to keep the horses and the fire out of sight; if we could stay hidden while we rest, I would feel much better about the situation."

"I don't know the area well enough to know if there's a place where we can hide nearby. However, I think we can...modify...this building here to make it secure enough to pass the night in," Elodie says, gesturing to the ruined walls containing the horses. "I can transform a wooden log or something into a frame for a roof, that will also cover the current campfire. Then we could cover the frame in tree branches or long grass. Talmut and I can use our magic to repair these broken bricks to fill in the gaps of the broken walls. If we start now, we can probably finish before dark!"

"I think, instead, we should travel back to Umberfall and seek a removal of the curses that have afflicted us.  Then, after a good nights rest, we return on the morrow."

"Well met, Swank.  Thank you for assisting our aids against the giant.  I am Talmut-Xisper, son of the Fourth House of Nu'll.  The Black Blades carry quite a reputation - I was told of a few of their exploits on my travel here from Ma'ag.  I think I can speak for my companions when I say let us buy you a meal and a drink in town, it is the least we can do."

Lets head home, Remove Curses, split loot, and exp. up, we can start fresh with 151 (Swank) tomorrow!

"If you think that would be safer," Gumphrey replies, "then, okay. Let's do it ... but I might not be much help, if we run into trouble." As he finishes his sentence, he holds up his injured arm, as proof.

Lindy remains silent, but looks to Elodie for guidance.

Wincing, Halvar struggles to his feet. "Now that I've had my nap," he says, "I'm ready to go. We can ride back to town or we can track down that giant ... I'm ready for either!"

Glory just shakes her head at Halvar.

Flint moves to Talmut's side. "If there's a trouble, Glory and I can try to protect the injured. Maybe it would even be best for the wounded to ride off at the first sign of danger, leaving the healthy to guard their escape? I mean, whatever you think. You're the boss."
