Emergency Preparedness List

I thought a thread for collaboration on survival lists would be a good addition to the forum.

I had considered putting a shakelight on the list, as well.
Ultimaley, I left it off in favor of multiple small flashlights.
But, the shake-light DOES offer some advantages over a regular flashlight.

The sharpener is a really good idea; even a basic whetstone.
Not sure how I missed that one. Fortunately, I had a whetstone, already.

I had considered picking up a Machete, but didn't add it to the list because my local terrain wouldn't require it.
I don't think anything in the local Flora can't be handle by a knife and/or handaxe.

Books are a popular choice, but obviously the added weight is a challenge.
I would think specific bags might incorporate specific books, but your home-survival could store quite a few.

A word on knives ...

Obviously, the is a large vareity of knives avaialble, each ideal for a specific purpose.

A survival/utility knife (such as the Ka-Bar) should be your first choice.
It is suitable to a large variety of uses; including self-defense, cutting ropes, and even crude skinning/butchering.

A slightly smaller hunting knife or a folding pocket knife might be your second choice, for the same reasons.

If you have the luxory of bringing an assortment of knives with you, the following are worth considering:
-- A Boning knife for removing bones from fish would be handy, especially if you are relying on fishing for sustenance.
-- A Kitchen knife or Chef's knife would be useful, especially if you are using your main knife for more than just food prep (avoid contamination).
-- A Paring knife for the same reason.
-- A Carving knife or a Cleaver, for the same reason.
-- A Utility blade for more detail-oriented construction projects.

I think I mentioned before that the list structure was subject to change.
It is currently structured along a "how long will I be gone" hierarchy, because that's how other sites had them listed. After thinking about it long enough, however, I...

EDIT: This list was no longer up-to-date. So, I deleted it and posted a newer, more accurate account

There is a kitchen knife that is known as a "utility knife" (or as a kitchen utility knife), but it's garbage ... filler for lame knife sets ... chef's point-and-laugh at them, because the ordinary chef's knife is better for nearly every task & a parrying knife is a better second knife, because it's better than the utility knife for any task that the chef's knife is not.

But I have a feeling you meant like a chef's survival knife? A "hunter's kitchen" knife, so to speak. That I don't know ... but I imagine a Camp Knife might do the job.

But, if you just meant "an all-purpose kitchen knife", then a Chef's Knife (aka. a Cook's Knife) is the one you want: 8" is probably best, but they come in every size from 6" to 12." Global, Wusthof, Kershaw Shun, Henckel's, Sabatier, MAC, and Misono are supposed to be good brands.
