Book Two: Chapter Seven: "Restless Remains" Empty Book Two: Chapter Seven: "Restless Remains"

Post  Malazek Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:46 pm

Continued from Chapter Six ...

And now, after several days of respite in the wartorn Imperial City, the heroes finally step through a Portal to the Femdrell. They arrived in the midst of towering old trees, whose majestic age can only be guessed at. The peaceful silence is a shocking contrast to the busy background noise of the city streets.

The portal iself is covered with a blanket dried leaves thick enough to obscure the heroes' knees. Under all the leaves, the surface seems to be made of wood. After closer inspection, it proves to sit on the flat of a tree trunk; a trunk that once belonged to a tree so wide that it could easily dwarf many of the building in the Imperial City.

A few birds chirp.
A wind howls.
Somewhere nearby, a forest rodeny of some type scurries off.

Otherwise, the forest is silent. Dead silent.
Where is everybody?

Passive Insight: Vangg feels the undeniable sensation of being watched.

Passive Perception: Davin looks about and sees only trees; but after a monent, he notices the rustic wood platforms constructed far overhead; yet, the forest's canopy is lies even beyond the platforms. Then, he spots a hidden archer in the bows of one of the trees. Then another. Then another. The archers are all but invisible, but are clearly elves, dressed in the same style of clothing as Prince Helfare's men and Princess Rhyannon's bodyguard.

Before leaving, Alex finds Siqerod and informs him of his success in learning his resistance spell. "Do you have any other homemade magics you might care to share?" He scretches under Crystal's chin as she perches on his shoulder.

DM: You know what? I'm going to respond to this back in Chapter 6, where it happened.

Even the forest-born Elves, hidden and silent in their boughs, can not hide from the Hemingr-enhanced sight of the Ranger, Davin Fletcher. Davin holds his hand up in greeting to the sentries.

"Lirail'm shyraes. Shi mael vaeli eil shol si masti." ("Greeting's brothers. We seek peace and bring the same.")

A yonder elflord answers, his downy voice drifting to you upon a westward wind:

O.o.C.: w00t! Chap. 7!

"There they go with that 'Prince Palol' again. While we're here we really should try to find out why they all keep calling you that." He pauses, and smiles as he mumbles "Krenay hin aeyh fas markel ev sanna miv tel abenim!" (Unless that girl has been telling them what she's gonna do to you!) If Davin would like, Straegis will help with the introductions in Elven.

From overhead, a lightweight rope drops to the forest floor a few yards from where the you are standing; a slender elflord descends the rope at astonishing speed, and meets you on the ground. "Kaerol sai eir os o, eil shaelysti sai si Thaestaer! Tia tyrol, si volaer, car syr ti eir eirdyr o! Air air ei vaeresi sai tholalia taer o. Eil Ai mi sar caes shys shaesi sia." (Greetings to all of you, and welcome to the Femdrell! My cousin, the princess, has told me all about you! It is a pleasure to finally meet you. And I see that her words were true).

Half a dozen more ropes drop down besides you, these with no elflords to ride them. "Eilyrn ti sai caer o iar si vydaer ..." (Allow me to help you up the ropes ...). He walks around the group, embracing each hero and then helping them secure the ropes about the midsection; his embrace of Davin seems a little too lasting.

When the elflord hugs Alex, Alex feels lightheaded; a strange static between them; the smell of Ozone fills the Aquamancer's nose. The elflord looks at Alex for a long moment before moving on ...

Straegis is the last one he helps, to him he says, "Pai o vaestaestaes ti, Jhys Straegis? Air air Ai, Aubrey! Pai o vaestaestaes ti?" (Do you remember me, Lord Straegis? It is I, Aubrey. Do you remember me?). Straegis vageuely recalls a elfchild named Aubrey, who was the cousin of Princess Rhyannon; annoying little brat.

Davin turns a bit red and loses his train of thought at the Marshal's jibe. Sending daggers at Straegis (not real ones, lol - just the eyes!), he then almost imperceptibility nods at the offer of assistance with introductions.

Davin pauses for a half a second at the Elflord's embrace before smiling at the generous greeting. There are such things in nature, but....nahhh...couldn't be. Instead of wrapping the rope around himself to be ferried up, the Ranger declines, instead mimicking Aubrey's nimble and effortless climbing.

Not understanding any of the gibberish these folk are talking he accepts the embrace passively, then sniffs afterwards.

Alex's eyes pop wide. "What was that?"

Crystal lounges on his shoulder.

Aubrey signals the elves above and the ropes become taut, pulling the heroes skyward toward the Elfin village overhead. Having refused to be tied off, Davin climbs up alongside his companions. Aubrey stays below; presumably to lead the wagon team somewhere suitable.

It takes several minutes for the heroes to reach the village above; but when they do, they witness a vast and complex network of catwalks and platforms. The trees that support the walkways appear to be very much alive, despite the village's additions to the canopy.

Several elves greet them at the top, eager to help the heroes get to their feet.
"Honored guests," an elflady says, "welcome to the Femdrell."

The elves lead the heroes along the wooden walkways, winding through the treetops, until a stately white palace comes into view. How the trees are able to support such a large structure is a mystery; but nonetheless, here it is.

When the heroes finally reach the palace, they find the front doors open and waiting for them. Entering the vestibule, the heroes see a large fountain in the middle of the room. Airy staircases dance around the fountain as they climb to the many balconies above. (All of this appears to be made of wood and mithril).

Prince Helfare approaches, descending the widest staircase towards the fountain and the heroes. His sister, the beautiful Princess Rhyannon, enters onto one of the balconies behind him ...

"Oh, you've made it!"
"We are so glad you could join us. Please, come in."

Helfare rushes towards the group, and grasps hands with everyone.
"Welcome, my friends! Welcome!"

"Prince.
"Princess."

Verity returns the Elf Nobles greetings warmly, delighted as he is to see them, and to have survived the ascent by slender rope at his fully armoured weight.

He will aid Davin`s diplomacy whenever possible, but leave most of the talking to "Prince Palol".

Straegis is in awe, he has read about these cities and palaces built in the trees but seeing them in person is more than he could have ever imagined. Straegis is excited to see the Prince and Princess again, he bows politely and hugs them both when they reach him.

Post  Swifthand Wed Aug 26, 2009 8:57 am

Davin can not help to gape in awe at the natural majesty and beauty of the Elven homeland. His eyes never stop moving, trying to take it all in, almost as if afraid this could be his only chance at being welcome amongst his people. When the Companions are led into the palace, once again, the Ranger gazes in wonder and delight until he is pulled from his own thoughts by the shouted greeting of Prince Helfare. Then, finally, Davin see's her, the Princess Rhyannon.

Swifthand wrote:I turn to the wizard after the shimmering portal springs into life.

"Could I step through? I will come right back, but I would see the fair land described to me by my old friend Kardan."

After stepping through the portal with Rhyannon and anyone else, I quickly take in as much of my surroundings as possible, and then take the Princess by her hand.

"Ai shor taji mesi os shyraes cyrn o eisi mari, Volaer." ("I will make sure your brother knows you are safe, Princess.") Taking another look around, I get a half-grin on my face before turning back to the Princess. "Ai shar vol. Byr ceri eir shaerorer. Ialair shi taer eindral." " ("I was right. Not quite as beautiful. Until we meet again.")

I lightly kiss Rhyannon's ivory hand and then turn and leave, stepping through the portal.

Diplomacy=28, +2 from Verity, +2 "Dressed to Impress" circ bonus?=32

Though Davin tries not to stare at the Princess with his mouth wide open, the results are middling at best. The Ranger bows low as the Elflord and Lady approach, and then stands tall to grasp Helfare's arm in the Hunter's Grip. Then turning to Rhyannon, he gently grasps her hand and kisses it's perfect, ivory skin.

"Prince Helfare! I see you made it back to the Femdrell in one piece! And Princess Rhyannon, the sight of your beauty fills me with hope - for how could such beauty exist in a world destined for ill?"

Seeing the confusion on some of his Companion's faces when faced with the Elven language, Davin takes the opportunity to make a suggestion.

After hearing Davin's tale and listening to Straegis's request, Helfare says "Well, we don't have a mage corps, per se. We do have several institutions which could safeguard such a powerful secret, but I'm not sure which one would be best. Perhaps the Immortal Counsel of Witches? Or the Hierophants? Or maybe the Aois-dàna?" After a moment of hesitation, he asks "Is there any reason or criteria by which I should judge one group more competent than another? Perhaps I should bring forth the most esteemed member of each group? ... What would you suggest?"
